Absolutely, but Dogs more so than Cats, though one individual Cat may be more lonely for you than another Cat. It depends on their personality.
Remember, Dogs are pack animals, and you are the Alpha in their pack. If they must be alone while you are at work, try to come home at the same time as much as possible. Incredibly, they have an "internal clock" and will be waiting for you to arrive.
I leave my TV on at low volume on the cable news channel while I'm gone. They seem to like the sound of human voices. Greet your Dog enthusiastically, make a big fuss. Take them for a walk right away before you flick on the TV and get lazy. Spend a little time with your animal until you and they eat dinner. Tell them about your miserable day and your lousy back-stabbing boss. They will listen with rapture and won't complain. Hugging and petting with make you both feel better.
Cats are more independent by nature, but they get lonely too. Go to any animal shelter and you will discover that there is no substitute for the human touch and kind words. Greet them with joy upon your arrival back home. Pet them and talk to them, too. If your cat is the socialible type, a second cat is often very helpful. When you already have one Cat, two is no big deal and twice the fun!
I had an older Dog and a younger Cat who loved each other dearly. When my Dog passed, my Cat literally went bonkers. I went to the shelter and took Roxanne, the Cat, with me to pick out a friend for herself. She chose a grown Cat, we named Chi-Chi. (He's a male and both are neutered, of course!) That was 3 months ago and they're like brother & sister. And yes, Dogs and Cats can get along. It depends on the particular Dog and Cat involved.

of course they do... dogs more than cats though. They can get seperation anxiety quite badly and some may urinate/defecate or even destroy your house while you're away. Those are signs of seperation anxiety/loneliness. A lot of dogs don't care if there are "good food and fun toys" left for them when you're out of the house because there is no one there to enjoy it with. A lot of dogs that I have had will not eat when no one is around, and nevermind playing with toys... if there is no one there to play with, what is the fun??

I think if they are left alone for long periods of time, they do. Although I am sure with good food and fun toys, it is tolerable to them. Sometimes we just have to do what we have to do. It would be nice if we could stay home with them all of the time, but we cant and they do alright while we are gone.

Yes. Animals do suffer from seperation anxiety as well as humans. Animals feelings can be hurt just like a human as well. Just because they can't speak thier mind, doesnt mean they cant be hurt mentally. A gretat way to prevent seperation anxiety are Pet Sitter videos. Available at PetSmart!

Yes, it's called seperation anxiety and causes many dogs and cats to lash out on things around the house and tear them up.

Haven't you ever came home at the end of the day and your dog is waiting for you with it's tail wagging? Yes, they miss you. They have fun with their toys and tearing things up (as puppies) but nothing takes the place of you.

Oh yes, every dog needs a master and someone their to comfort him/her. But if you absolutely have to leave it alone then put the tv on or the radio on so it at least can hear noise. My uncle does this and his dog does fine, this process also helps your dog to stop chewing on furniture while you are away!

It relies upon :) see you later as your prepared to sparkling the canines, canines scent a lot. And are you waiting to provide your canines quite a number of interest? in case you get a cat its a lot less messy and its self sufficient regardless of the indisputable fact that its not as pleasant a minimum of you've a significant different. and not in any respect all cats are cry little ones, canines bark a lot too and they are exceptionally noisy

I would think they do. Food does not replace companionship and toys will only occupy their time for awhile. That could be one reason the pets are always so happy when their owners return home.
