You can tell which of these answers were written by those with no experience with depression.

Try this simple experiment: find a very heavy object, say a refrigerator. Gently lower this heavy object onto your toe. That is depression. Note that it kind of absorbs most of your attention, and that you'll do almost anything to escape it.

Note that you will attract a clucking circle of advisors, some of whom are licensed to give advice, who smile and suggest that you simply cheer up and shrug it off and look on the bright side.

Now remove the refrigerator from your toe. That is the effect of an anti-depressant, when and if it happens to work.

From personal experience i'd say they don't really make you feel anything specific, no high or anything, they just make you feel more able to cope. Instead of constantly feeling like crying for no reason, which you can feel when depressed, you don't feel like crying, you feel more normal.

It can depend on the type though. Mine experience is of SSRI's which are the ones that increase the seretonin in your brain. They are the most common i believe.

Really, you should be able to 're-create' the feel by doing some heavy exercise or eating some chocolate (both increase the seretonin in your brain, the same as anti-depresants), as does being out in the bright sunlight, but i'm personally not sure it feels exactly the same. It's similar though.

The feeling though only happens with ones that work with your body. Some people get bad side effects (although the side effects are worse at the beginning and get better as you start to feel better- and the pills start to work) and some people just find that some don't agree with them. Really though, if you find the right sort, they should make you feel more able to cope with life. That's what i've found.

Well, it depends on which anti-depressant you are taking. I've struggled with depression for almost 10 years and at the beginning it's pretty aweful. They experiement with different anti-depressants to find out which ones work the best for you. It takes about 1 week to several months before they actually start to do anything. Until that time, you can have really bad side effects like no libedo, insomnia, leg cramps, diarrea, nausea, etc... After 2 years we found that Paxil or Zoloft worked the best for me. Personally, I like the zoloft better because its stronger. When it works at full capicity, I feel really good - not just emotionally, but physically too. For example: in the spring, I notice my sense of smell is heightened and I notice the smell of fresh cut grass and flowers better. Also, my skin is more sensitive (in a good way). For example, on a spring day, when it's nice out, the sunshine on my skin feels nice, whereas before the Zoloft, I couldn't even feel the sun on my skin. When a breeze blows, it feels nice, where as before Zoloft- it was just "annoying wind". My mood is more optomistic even when I'm faced with hardship, I look at it as a "challenge", not an obsticle. That's my experience. Hope that helps! Take care.

At first usually they make you feel relaxed, maybe even sleepy. If it's the right anti-depressant, you should start feeling better as the days and weeks pass. If you don't. the Doctor tries another until just the right one makes you feel "normal"

They do NOT give a "high" if that's what your asking. They produce serotonin in the brain in people suffering from depression. A depressed person may get relief from them in a few weeks and feel better. But the do not give you a high. There are some side effect associated with antidepressants.

In a word, NUMB.
they make you feel like you can cope with things a lot better in my opinion, but they also can stop you from feeling in the slightest bit sexy! You don't feel the highs and lows of every day life... you are just kinda on a level.

They have very different effects on different people, but they definitely don't act as a magic cure!!

They make you feel "normal" again. Alot of critics say that they don't work, but they do...of course your external problems will still be there if you take them or not, but it does take the edge off your anxiety and helps you to deal with them with a clear head.

From what I understand, they just make you feel happy, lighter, like everything is or will be ok. In other circumstances, just emotionless so that you don't feel depressed. Never taken any myself.

I mainly have anxiety and they have stopped my mind from racing. Before antidepressants, I couldn't go to sleep at night because I would think and think of dozens of things. My mind was never at ease, like there was a tornado inside my brain.

I did'nt feel any difference, downside( especially if it's Lexapro) is a tingling feeling in your legs that can really keep you from sleeping, and inability to ejaculate( not all that bad!)
