With strong emphasis on the word "fanatics," I would say that's true. For that matter, they seem to be out of touch with reality in general, not just the 21st century. But the "fanatics" part is very important - the vast majority of religious believers are perfectly normal, modern people who just happen to believe in their particular religion.

First I believe that religious fanatics are really just not in touch with THEMSELVES. Some of them seem to be hiding from something in themselves that they are afraid of.
I think it is safe to say that anybody who is a fanatic about ANYTHING is out of touch with real life. I'm a church-goer and believer, but most religions are based on legalism and not the "good-news" that is important to be truly happy in life. I DO believe that is important to have a relationship with some kind of higher power... whatever or whoever they want to call it/him/her... and be held accountable for their actions. (My Name is Earl and Karma, for example) Grouping a lot of people who really want to do what is right, no matter how badly led by HUMANS makes no more sense than any other kind of bigotry.

It seems to me that 21st century society is out of touch with God.

Not at all. That is a ridiculous assumption! Most are more in touch with the 21st century than you think, and more than the eye can see.
