How do I go about having my diagnosis reversed. I am confident I am not bipolar, as I have many factors which led to my hospitalization. I need a real dr. or someone who would know how to answer this question seriously. Please. I am misunderstood completely.

I've been treated for Bipolar for over 20 years (and, by the way, hospitalized 14 times)

One of the things I find about most Bipolar people I know is that we have trouble accepting the diagnosis. After all, there aren't any blood tests, nothing that shows up on an X-ray or MRI. There is only the subjective observance of our behavior and our reported behavior. It's perfectly natural to question the diagnosis. I know I still do.

Go see another doctor to confirm or contradict your belief. Best wishes to you.

Why do you feel you were misdiagnosed? We need more details in order to answer your question. Maybe you just can't accept being diagnosed with such an illness. I know. I was diagnosed with depression about 10 years ago and boy was I ever in denial! But, someone once told me: "If you were diagnosed with diabetes or cancer, sure you'd get a 2nd and 3rd opinion, but after that - would you keep denying it and getting more opinons until the disease killed you in the vain hope that someone would finally tell you what you wanted to hear or would you start fighting it so you could save your life?" The answer of course was: "I'd stop denying it and start treating the cancer or diabetes asap." So, that's what I chose to do with my depression: I stopped denying it and started treating it. Now, that doesn't mean YOU have to tell everyone you are Bi-Polar! Your medical history is no one's business but yours and your Dr's! You don't need to discuss this with your co-workers or friends if you don't want to. But if you were hospitalized and diagnosed 3 times over the last 10 years, I hate to break this to you: it's not a misdiagnosis. You are in denial.

People aren't hospitalized for being Bipolar. They're hospitalized because they are deemed to be some sort of danger to themselves or others due to their manic episode.

So what I'm saying is not that you were accurately diagnosed, but rather that there must have been a reason for hospitalization that was concrete and obvious. I'm not understanding what those circumstances were that landed you in inpatient care, but assuming they were appropriate reasons for hospitalizations, I'm not sure what the real harm would be in having that diagnosis. I would need more information.

I think that when you were in the hospitals if it was not bipolar than the doctors would have found out. My husband and my son have bipolar and my husband goes to the hospital several times a year, but if you want another opinion, see a psychologist.

You may have been diagnosed as bipolar, but they would have to have a reason to place you in a hospital. You have a right to see your medical records. I was "petitioned in " by my case worker. Every one in the ward was telling me that I'd be in there for at least 2 weeks. I calmly explained to the psychiatrist why I thought the case worker was overreacting to me.

I got out in 3 days. I kept seeing the doc who saved my *** from getting locked up for up to 90 days, and got on the right meds. I know what is on those forms and what I had to do to keep the court and others satisfied. I would have lost everything because I was getting tossed out of my apartment and was having problems with my now ex. Know what your those medical records state and have your doc give another evaluation of you.

what makes you think you was misdiagnosed? have you taken the time to read up on this disease? Bipolar people have up days and low days but one thing they have in common is feeling confused and angry at not being understood. you cant get this diagnosis reversed because in order to be offically diagnosed you would have had to had a full mental work up and a cat scan of your brain. your best bet is to go read up on the issue and see if maybe it helps you to understand why they made this determination.

i agree with painfully yours. what makes you think you have been misdiagnosed. i have bipolar disorder and have been hospitalized 2 times in the past 3 years. bipolar people can have extreme highs and extreme lows. and if an extreme low ends with you in the hospital, its okay. you're there to get better.

and i think if you think you have been misdiganosed, try another doctor, get a second oppinion.
