I guess I'm starting my "nesting" stage of my pregnancy. I wanted to know if it was ok to wipe down a used crib, given to us from a friend of a family friend, with rubbing alcohol. My bf's mom suggested that as well as wiping down the mattress with rubbing alcohol, too. Just wanted to know if anyone's ever done that and if it's safe, and how do u know for sure? However, I am planning to buy a new mattress anyway, but is rubbing alcohol safe to use for cleaning my baby's crib?

i have always used rubbing alcohol to clean the cribs, mattresses, even toys that were passed to my kids. its easier to pour it into an empty spray bottle and give it a good spraying. the spray gets into nooks and crannies that wiping can miss. best to use outdoors or in well ventilated area and NOT place the child in it until the odor is gone. generally i would say at least a day. welcome to mama -hood :)

Rubbing alcohol is not going to leave a toxic residue, if that is what you are asking. It is 70% water, and evaporates fairly quickly. Rubbing alcohol has been used in the past (and likely is still in use) to sterilize medical equipment. At some point it was discovered that some germs can thrive in rubbing alcohol, so it was less of a perfect solution, but I don't know of new alternatives (other than soaps and autoclaves).
My only concern is how difficult it will be to thoroughly clean the surfaces of the crib. Really though you are just talking about a previous baby occupant. They don't leave much behind other than drool and maybe sweat. Babies don't tend to have transferrable diseases (as far as I know).

Yes. But you can clean it with a disinfecting detergent and wipe it down with rubbing alchol afterwards.There are desinfecting detergents that are all natural. Ask your doctor.

first of all congrats! i pretty sure you can wipe down a cribe with rubing acohol on a crib just make sure it is absolutly dry!

Use Lysol. I would get a new mattress.

I've always used the clorox wipes. They kill the germs, and they're easy to use.

you could also use lysol wipes
