Under the laws of most states, autopsy can be ordered by the medical examinerwho is is a physician, or a Pathologist. Autopsies can be ordered in every state when there is suspicion of foul play. In most states, autopsy can be ordered when there is some public health concern, i.e., a mysterious disease or a worry about the quality of health care. In most states, an autopsy may be ordered if someone dies unattended by a physician (or attended for less than 24 hours), or if the attending physician is uncomfortable signing the death certificate.

In humans we call it an autopsy. In animals, it is called a necropsy, but it is the same thing really.
A pathologist is a physician who specialises in the dectection and diagnosis of disease or injury by examination of the organs, and cellular structure of the human body. The cellular structure also includes blood and chemical processes of cellular life. A forensic pathologist is a pathologist who is specially trained in the examination of humans for the legal system. Not all pathologists are forensic pathologists. While a pathologist would be able to determine the cause of death or illness in a person, a forensic pathologist would be able to determine the cause, manner and time of death in a person, and furthermore, make a distinction in terms of a legal definition as to whether the death was accidental, natural or homicide.
