I recently adopted a Blue & Gold macaw who came with the name of "Pervert". He says his name and it actually fits him (don't ask! lol)

Should I change it? If so, what do you think I should change it to? :-)

Problems with keeping his name:
He goes out with me all the time and people of course ask what his name is *blush*

He was previously a magic show bird and when we got him he was a beautiful flyer. We had to clip him for now but in the future I plan on recall training him and letting him be a beautiful flyer once again. I am just picturing me out in my neighbor hood calling out......"Pervert COME!!"
See my dilemma? LOL

I would change it. The bird will eventually learn a new name, they are smart. If he doesn't keep hearing his old name he'll say it less and less over time. It is often a good idea to change a pet's name when they are adopted so they can start over anew. For example, how do you know your parrot associated the name with positve things? Maybe the previous owner called him over by name and teased or hit him. A new name can help give a parrot a fresh start in their new home.

Personally, I would not want to have a pet with that name and I question the integrity of the person who owned him previously - it is a disrespectful name for an intelligent animal. Frankly, I strongly suspect a person who would bestow a name like that probably was not the most appropriate parrot owner. I would also be embarassed when visitors to my home asked what the parrot's name was. Do yourself and the bird a favor and change the name to something with some dignity.

Do you have kids or some other reason to NOT call him "pervert" besides the obvious?
How old is your bird? When I got mine, he was 1 1/2, and his name was "Binky". I changed it to "Romeo" and he has totally adjusted.........of course, I've had him 20+ years now.
That's the other thing is that you need to realize these birds live 75 years or so. If YOU don't want the name and whoever you LEAVE THE BIRD to doesn't like the name, the sooner you change it the better. He/She will be quite adaptable to the new name and as long as you do not "encourage" or repeat the word "pervert" (maybe answer him/her with the new name) he/she will grow bored with that name and accept the new one.

I have two birds that I got pre-named. Neither are names I would have chosen. Both birds knew and said their names so I officially kept the names, however, I gave both birds a nickname, that I like, that I use with some frequency. When I am giving a command or a correction I use the birds real name. When I am praising or just talking to the bird, I alternate with the nickname and the real name. Both birds now also know their nickname and the macaw actually says her nickname more than her real name now

I think you should keep it. But, if you do change it, change it to something that SOUNDS like Pervert. Like...LOL Herbert. Start saying that instead, so he gets it, and then if you must you can start nicknaming him. Bert, Bertie, Bernie....you see where I'm going with this?

Rio our Military Macaw already had his name when I met him. We kept it because he already knew his name, and he'd been called that his whole life, and with everything else that he was going through, it just seemed unfair to take his name away from him. As we got to know him better, he started nick naming himself. He calls himself Ri-Ri. It's really cute. He'll go "Hi Ri-Ri" in this sweet little high pitched baby voice. It's adorable!

Herbert doesn't suck...right? LOL It'd be easier to explain to Grandma or the Minister than Pervert...

I'd change it because now that he's living with someone different, his personality is probably going to adapt and possibly change.

My friend has a macaw that she calls "Pekoe", and I've always liked the sound of it.

Wait until you've had him awhile and observe his behavior and quirks and you can come up with something that isn't so....obvious.

Hee hee, thats funny, however "pervert" is not the best name ....since hes a big bird why not call him "Ceaser" you could change if you want to ,but since he has "pervert" down already maybe you could call him something that would go with "pervert" ...I call mine "Molly" and now that "He" has gotten older,I find out she is boy....I got him very young ,barely feathered and thought it was a girl....,so now I call him " Morley",its so close that no one knows the difference....All mine is saying is "what you doing over and over and calls my husbands name ,and he calls the cat, saying,,,here kekekekek,I love my bird, hes so funny...

Things that rhyme with pervert.
Herbert, Sherbert, Gerti
If it rhymes and sounds familiar the bird will eventually switch over, if you keep refering to it as the new name.
Good Luck..... I have a cockatoo that beeps like the sound of a tractor trailor backing up! and he's VERY persistant with it!

I think you should keep it because no matter how hard you train him he's always gonna say that his name is Pervert. And if the personality fits the name...well then, keep it

If the bird already came with a name just keep the name he came with. It sounds kind of cute and funny.
