My 3 year old chews gum. It took awhile before she figured out not to swallow it though. The greatest thing- its keeps them QUIET!! I give it to her while we are driving in the car and I can listen to the radio without any "back ground noise"

Try taking an ice cube and rub it over the gum. When the gum becomes hard you will be able to pick it off. Good Luck

It's really up to you, but I can tell you that my 4 year old daughter, just learned to not swallow gum, however, she's got it in her hair 2 or 3 times (she has long beautiful hair) it takes alot of patience to wash out the gum as oppose to cut it, and we have gum on 2 spots on the carpet, this all from her having gum 3 or 4 times, and "accidents" happening. Needless to say, there is a strong rule in our house that she is NOT to have gum!

It's up to you, I don't know what you're worried about but if it's the sugar, then you could get him sugar free gum like Wrigley's Extra... or if you're worried he'll swallow it and it'll stay in his stomach for 7 years then fear not! That story is a total myth, completely untrue. The biggest danger I see with bubble gum is choking. But if you keep an eye on him I'm sure it would be fine.

That lady who acted like giving your kid gum was "giving in" is ridiculous. Should he be denied gum simply because of the philosophy that he shouldn't have things simply because everyone else gets to enjoy them? I'd ask my doctor about it or do a little research online. I've known many kids under 5 who have chewed and enjoyed gum. I'd go with sugarfree for dental health purposes, but it's up to you.

I let my 3 year old chew gum. I just watch him with it and remind him to spit it out. If I don't remind him he is bound to swallow it. Other than that, I don't see a problem with gum chewing at age 3 and up. Three and under are the ones I really worry about choking, but, of course, it is always a good idea to keep an eye on kids regardless of age.

I have a 4 year old, and even though I see alot of kids her age with gum, I don't give it to her. There will be alot of years ahead to chew gum...

There is always a chance of choking with a wad of gum in a child that young, not to mention the sugar. Think of something else he would enjoy.

I let mine chew gum at three, although if they don't "get it" yet then I put it back in the cupboard for a few months and try again later. But I have friends who let their 18 month olds chew gum--they got it from the big siblings and they totally understand not to swallow it. You should let your son have some, explain not to swallow it, and he should be fine.
