Similar to the origins of other false doctrines, Islam's origins have been traced back by scholars to the ancient fertility religion of the worship of the moon god which was always the dominant religion of Arabia. The moon god was worshipped by praying toward Mecca several times a day, making an annual pilgrimage to the Kabah which was a temple of the moon god, running around the Kabah seven times, caressing an idol of a black stone set in the wall of the Kabah, running between two hills, making animal sacrifices, gathering on Fridays for prayers, giving alms to the poor, etc.. These were pagan rites practiced by the Arabs long before Muhammad was born.
What religion today practices the pagan rites of the moon god?
Islam!
This explains why the crescent moon is the symbol of Islam. That symbol was used for the moon god long before Muhammed was born. In fact, it was used by Arabs during the time of Jesus! Obviously, it is NOT the symbol of the same God that Christians woship!
So why is It placed on top of mosques and minarets and displayed on hats, flags, rugs, amulets and even jewelry? Every time you see the Muslim symbol of a crescent moon, you are seeing the ancient symbol of the moon god.
If the average Muslim would only study the history of their "Allah", they would know and understand that he is NOT the God of the Universe, but an idol...one of many worshipped in Arabia long before Muhammed was ever even "a twinkle in his Daddy's eyes."

The Jews and Christians in those pre islamic times were considered people of the book who believed in monotheism.

There was Christianity spread far & wide before Islam. Some rejected that Jesus Christ was the Son of the Living God, and rejected the cross and the resurrection from the dead.

Antichrists. Some say the moon god. I saw a star fall from the heavens. Those fallen stars are the inspiration of Islam.

Good question. I believe most would have followed pagan religions like Zoroastrianism or Mithraism (pagan religions of central Asia). Many of those living within the Roman Empire would have followed Greco-Roman paganism, and later maybe even Christianity (since places like Egypt and Syria had very strong local Christian populations, and remnants of these populations remain today).

Pagan religions in the West. Hinduism in the East

Hinduism is the world's oldest religion. Islam was spread by the sword and wiped a lot of Hindus out.

The religion of the Arabian pennisula was largely based on idolatry, although a few tribes had actually been converted to Judaism. Egypt, Syria, and what is now Iraq were largely Christian.

Judaism and Christianity were big ones as well as polytheists and pagans, until Muhammed started his series of conquests and oppressed non-Muslims under the jizya or forced them to convert or die.
The Crusades were a response to Islamic imperialism and oppression over the centuries.
