I went on a Carnival cruise 2 years ago at 18, almost 19, and here's how it went:
The first day on the boat, they gave drinks to everyone. Didn't check if anyone was under 21. The next morning they went to bill my card and found out I was under 21 and couldn't bill me, so I got the first day of drinks for free!
The rest of the trip they wouldn't serve me directly, but they said that my 21 year old boyfriend had to buy them for me. We did this in plain view of the waiters, and they didn't care. They were making money!
On the island itself, (we went to the Bahamas too) I don't think there is a drinking age. Actually, at Sr. Frogs, there is a sign that say "you must be this tall to drink" and there is this little frog holding up his hand at like 4 feet.
All in all, you shouldn't have any problem. Have fun!
ps: don't listen to the people trying to scare you by telling you that the crew will throw you off the boat at the next port. (They do say that in the rules on the Carnival website), but I HIGHLY doubt that they would for just drinking underage. Maybe if you hurt someone or broke something or acted like a complete idiot, but not for just drinking.

I think if you have your older friends just kind of nonchalantly buy you the drinks, it'll be okay. In the Bahamas, the drinking age is 18, and if you go to Senor Frogs (which I totally recommend: it's so much fun, and the MC is awesome at getting the crowd going) they'll give you shots all night for free for answering questions right or just being in a conga line, things like that.
I wouldn't entirely recommend having your friends buy you drinks though until you see how you handle the motion sickness. If you're going out of Port Canaveral with Carnival, the ride isn't always smooth. But some people handle it and others don't. Just be safe and have a fun time! The Bahamas are a lot of fun. Enjoy!

As long as someone purchases the drinks for you and you don't attract attention to yourselves by getting stupid, you shouldn't have a problem. The cruise lines do not spy on their passengers but if you stand at the bar while the drinks are being purchased and take the drinks out of the hands of the purchasers while the bartenders watch...need I say more? (Despite what has been posted here, the waiters may not say anything but the bartenders have to or they lose their jobs ) Be discreet and drink responsibly (yeah I know I sound like the liquor ads but they are right). And as one poster said--by paying for your tickets, you have given the cruise lines the option of putting you and your entire party ashore in any port, foreign or domestic, if you break their rules. Check your cruise tickets and you'll see!!! Oh and btw--be real careful in the Bahamas--undercover cops do everything they can to entrap you into doing illegal things on the islands and entrapment is not illegal there! Be careful and don't stray off the main routes. Pickpockets are everywhere and the cops shrug their shoulders and tell you you should have been more careful!!!

Once you are in International waters. most cruise ships will serve alcohol to any person over 18. If not on the ship, I know you can drink over 18 in the Bahamas and most other countires. The USA is one of very few counties with an "over 21" policy on drinking!
P.S. Four words for you - Long Island Iced Tea!
