There are quite a few 3rd party books available. Check the shelves at the Apple Store for some ideas. There are also websites with tutorials and examples.

If you’ve recently gotten a Macintosh computer, you may be surprised to find a lot of software pre-installed, such as Macintosh’s Garageband. Don’t be fooled by the price tag: Garageband is a full-featured computer-recording software program.

Open the program and load one of the Demos to see what it can do.
Also with the program open select help and it will guide you through your first project. I use Garageband a lot and have made some bad *** jams. Nice thing is all the sounds, riffs and aiffs are open source so if you make a really bad *** tune and want it as your own, you can.
After you create your first song you can send it to iTunes where you can burn it to CD to jam in your car, iPod, e-mail, convert it to an MP3, Aiff and post it to your myspace page.
