most mainstream Christian denominations (Catholic, Methodist, Episcopal, Anglican, Orthodox) observe Lent, that starts on Ash Wednesday and ends on Good Friday (the Friday before Easter.)

Traditionally, the 40 days of Lent corresponds to the 40 days that Jesus spent fasting, and resisting the temptations of Satan, before He began His public ministry.

In the same way, Christians are to observie Lent by denying themselves certain things they cherish, as a means of penance and preparation for the Lord's passion, death, and resurrection.

Lent is a Roman Catholic season but I believe that some other denominations observe it aswell. It represents the 40 days Jesus Christ fasted and lived in the desert befor his Public ministry. Catholics partake in the season of lent by fasting, and doing penance and praying to mimic Jesus. Lent start Ash wednesday and ends Holy Thursday, ash wednesday is on Febuary 21 this year.
