In my humble opinion, the Nikon D80 is just great. You can afford the D200 but all that gives you is a metal body and faster shooting rate. If these things aren't critical to you then I recommend the D80 without the slightest hesitation. The camera in USD should set you back around $990. This will leave you room to get say an 18-200 VR lens and a 2GB memory card, bag and a few other items you will need.

One piece of advice is to go to a camera store and hold both a Nikon and a Canon in your hand. Check the feel for you including size weight, hand grip comfort and control layout. If possible shoot a few frames with each camera.

Hope this helps.

Huh? D80 is Nikon and for 3K you can get Canon 5D. It is a cheap alternative than getting the Mk-II and it takes stunning pictures. But of course for 2K you can get.... the Nikon D200 or the Canon 30D. Just depends on what your needs are. I wanted Canon because I am used to Canon's interface, and I found it easier to use than Nikon.
