I think you're just emotionally caught up, but you could do it...yes, you would need a credit card and a route plan and a cell phone....go south along (but not on) interstate 10....i saw a website of a very experienced rider who rode Georgia to Cali, and did it all with no paniers and only 30lbs of equipment he carried in his pockets and on a small frame bag and backpack....anywho, he ran into a guy who had come from FL, going to NV on a piece of crap mountain bike, and he was ok....it'll be the trip of a lifetime though

Yes, it's a great idea, but not something to be taken lightly. It's probably something like 2000 or so miles, and not something a novice cyclist should try. If you are an experienced cyclist, you know you need to be prepared for any weather, no matter what time of year you go. Remember, you'll be crossing the Rocky Mountains. You need to be able to carry a few spare tubes & tires & a patch kit + do basic repairs in case you have a mechanical in the middle of nowhere. You need to decide if you're camping or moteling. I did a ride from Georgia to Upstate NY in 1987 and I stayed in hotels. After being in the saddle for 7 or 8 hours, I didn't think sleeping on the ground would be much fun. Yes, it cost a little more, but on the other hand, it was less gear you needed to carry. Don't carry cash, use traveler's checks. You can't ride on the interstate, obviously, but try to take a route that runs paralle. That way, you won't have any trouble finding places to eat or sleep. Have a cell phone with a basic plan just in case. And make sure you check in back home every day or so, just to keep them informed of your progress and let them know you're OK.
If I had the chance, I would love to go again tomorrow, but those days are long gone! Too many family obligations. Check out www.raceacrossamerica.org. They have a web page on how to prepare a transcontinental ride. If you decide to go, good luck!
One more thing, have you thought about how you're getting back?

Not a bright idea...You can't go anywhere without your parents consent....You're talking about a 2,000 mile ride ! Where do you plan to eat and sleep ? Change clothes? In summer you'll be riding in 100'+ temps in some areas. Here's an idea, ride around in your neighborhood for 2 or 3 hours nonstop and see how you feel afterwards. You'd have to ride for at least 8 hours a day at a steady pace, and even then,it's going to take weeks to get there...Ask mom and dad for a bus ticket. Even then it will be a long ride.

You have to live on the road for a long time and will cost you more money and time that to just take the bus. If you're a real cyclist then do a group ride, it'll be safer for you than fending off perverts in the middle of nowhere.

commence off gently and boost your p.c... you ought to not be allowing your muscle tissues to warmth up adequate, extremely on the instantaneous of the morning. Im assuming you getting away from mattress so that you muscle tissues will be comfortable so that they do decide on this warmth up. yet another situation you're having is that your saddle proper is faulty. when you're stretching your legs to far on each and each pedal rev this can harm over the gap of the journey. position on the motorbike is major as not in hardship-free words can it make your legs harm yet when your sat incorrect and save going over a era of time you ought to harm your again or neck between others so verify it out.

people have done this. but be warned. we have very high mts out west. no flat land here. second do not go alone. it can be dangerous at your age. you will go from a few feet above sea level to the extreme heights of 4 to 8 feet and then there are the deserts to contend with.

I'd try shorter first. I did from Minneapolis to Chicago and I thought I was ready but it killed me. It was worth it though. remember all the desert you'll have to ride through too...

You're going to need a credit card so you can get a hotel room.
Anyway, it's best to ride west to east due to the wind.
