When fire engines were horse drawn, Dalmatians were well known for relating to horses, and keeping them calm.
Today the Dalmatian serves as a fire house mascot, but back in the days of horse drawn fire carts, they provided a valuable service. Dalmatians and horses are very compatible, so the dogs were easily trained to run in front of the engines to help clear a path and guide the horses and the firefighters to the fires quickly. They are still chosen by many fire fighters as pets in honor of their heroism in the past.> http://www.publicsafety.net/dalmatian.htm
Dalatians have been used throughout history for serious work. They have been sentinels on the borders of their homeland of Dalmatia and Croatia during wars. They worked as shepherds, as draft dogs, as hound dogs, as hunting dogs, as retrievers and as preforming dogs. Dalmatians are not only intelligent, but they also have excellent memories. Their speed, endurance and lack of a fear for horses, enabled them to become superb coach dogs for the horses and the engines.

The dalmation breed was created thru inbreeding and the result is birth defects with the predominate defect being that a lot of dalmations are deaf and the fire truck sirens do not bother them

My father was nyc fireman. Dalmations are great climbers of stairs, have great hearing for humans hiding in closets, and known to take the carbon monoxide poisoning first, which is heavy, odorless, and invisible and rises slowly from bottom...before the firemen are poisoned.

they are not fire dogs... they are a symbol...... therefore,,, todays dalmations are very hard to train... etc.. because so much emphasis was put into their looks for breeding and temperament and was left to the wayside.....

They are used for that because their jobs where important way back when none of us was living. And some one found out that dogs could do jobs and that's why dogs have jobs today.
