I read an article in a magazine about these TayBears ( www.taybears.com ) After reading that article made me feel like I want to help out also. I am 14, and i go to a private school of about 200 kids. I would like to do somthing simple (and cheap) that i can sell for about $2.00. I would love to help out some place that can use donations. Please let me know if you have any ideas... Thanks!

Hi!

You could try to make paper flowers of tissue or crepe paper ... I make them of:

fuzzy green pipe cleaners and pretty tissue paper / glue / ribbons

the supplies are very inexpensive to buy but everyone loves them

I did not find a website for you to show you how but you may check marthastewart.com and then go to "weddings" and then find "how to make paper flowers" on the list of things to do for a wedding.... those are pretty, but you still need instructions... she shows a little of it all on a video that is very pretty also, a wedding bouquet made entirely of paper flowers! The only trouble is that she did not show very much. Maybe you could e-mail her and find out if she recommends a good book and a good source of materials for your project. Try. She is a very nice lady. She might help. And she really does have very good sources for things... she's a pro! To e-mail her, just type in marthastewart.com and then in the left margin of that screen under "television"
click on "The Martha Stewart Show" and then on the screen that comes up, click on "Archives" ..... and you will find a little spot in the upper right hand corner a spot so you can send an e-mail!

If I find a good website for you I will let you know .... if you wish, you may type in "making paper flowers" on your computer ... I just did but everything looked so much more difficult than the way I was taught...but maybe you will find something you like. ..

as far as a place for donations ( and a lot of the kids in school might like to get together and make some different projects for raising money) ... these four were recommended by the actress Mia Farrow the other day when she was on The Martha Stewart
Show, telling about her work with children in Africa:

1 UNICEF
2 Genocide Intervention
3 Save Darfur
4 Save the Children

She said all of them were reliable and would get your donations to the people they were meant for, and not use the
money (on themselves >>>>shhhh!).

Very best of luck
Peace & Love

We are doing a coffee house at my school this weekend. A local coffee place provides fair trade coffee, staff pitches in and provides cookies, goodies, and ethnic treats, and students provide multicultural entertainment. There is a silver collection rather than a fee (people often donate more than a nominal fee). We found a great charity this year - www.feedthechildren.com
They use money to provide goats and other animal to African countries so they can provide for their own villagers. We had a penny parade too. Each class has a jar where you collect pennies for you class. However you put other money in the other classes jars (quarters, loonies, fives, etc) to delete the number of pennies they have. The class who has the most pennies once the value of the other money is subracted wins (donuts or a spare, etc). The idea is to fill your jar with as many pennies as you can and fill the rivals jars with larger bills. We raised almost $900 dollars doing this in only 2 weeks, enough to buy 42 goats for different villages in and around Uganda! That's cool you want to do something for others. I wish there were more teens like you!!

I volunteer@ our PTA thrift store. All the proceeds go to the schools. I can also drop in ,I don't have to make a scheduled commitment. Plus I can work as little as an hour.

You can go directly to the poor children in your area, or do it through your religious community and the UNICEF.
