With the current requirements for ultra low sulfur diesel in effect, it's unlikely that any car company, foreign (like GM who does theirs in Canada and Mexico) or domestic (like Honda who does theirs in Ohio) will be able to make vehicles that will meet the new standards.

When are you going to wake up and realize that there are really no truly AMERICAN car companies anymore. It is a global market, and a global industry. They make what will sell according to regional markets.
The US is not a good market for diesel cars, never has been. VW, Mercedes and SAAB have been selling diesels in the US for years. Do you see that many of them around? If the demand was such, they should be everywhere but they aren't. Maybe someday it will happen, but until then Europe is the place to be for diesels.
You must also consider the fact that many places can't afford, or do not have access to refineries or refined fuels (such as gasoline) like we spoiled Americans do.
Big picture...may want to check it out.
I would be cool with a Diesel Dak, but I wouldn't like to pay for the fuel, so I would settle for a gasoline RAM instead.

If you want a Diesel, get a VW or a Saab. Diesel technology has a long way to come before you will see it in the USA. There are a lot of gasoline cars on the road that get 30 or more mpg these days than ever before.

im with you. The rest of the people commenting know nothing about diesel. I would definitely buy a dakota diesel, better fuel milage, better hp, and torque. With all the diesel vehicles out there now it's driving the price of diesel through the roof. I hope they wake up soon though.

great article american idle. also what people dont understand is many of the american cars made in canada are actually mostly sold in canada. and ones made in mexico are mostly sold in mexico. in the year 2000 big three employed 390,000 american. by 2007 only 240,000. jobs were lost because japanese makers undeservingly stealing market. same time period all japanese manufactures combined only created 27,000 poor american jobs. toyota employs about a 3rd the americans as gm, or ford(im even considering their poor temporary worker jobs that makes up 10,000 of 33,000 of their jobs). yet they sell the americans more cars. then they got their fans believing they are more american. end this nonsense, american is the big three. american idle has my vote best answer.

And did you know that most foreign made stuff like Hundai are so cheaply made in other countries? We have Toyota plants here in the USA and it really depends on where your stuff comes from as to whether your vehicle is disposable or not. If you live here in America, do me a favor, move to India if you don't like it here. Stop knocking my country. We sure seemed to get it right with the Mustang didn't we?

So you want all american car makers to make diesel only.... oil is oil and gas comes from oil..... what is your point? Diesel costs more at the pump versus gas..... so I dont know what the advantage would be iff all vehicles were diesel.
