The US is in a tricky political situation. We have promised to protect Taiwan from Chinese agressions, but we are in a position where we don't want to get into it with the world's next superpower. At this point, China seems content calling Taiwan a Renegade Province, but then something about Tibet comes to mind. I don't think the US is going to actively separate the two -- but I'm not sure we'd step in if Taiwan need our help. (Especially these days, we're spread kind of thin)
