I go to a store in our small burg and there is a couple who shop there who are nice. Polite. etc. The problem is that they leave a trail of stink that is really not funny. Some days are worse than others and I just don't know a solution. I am pretty up front with people but they may not take it so well??? Is it possible they don't know?

This goes deeper than simple b.o. Before they are even near I wonder if my hygene failed or what pipe busted. It is for Real.

Really, in this case, you might just have to live with it. There is virtually no way of letting somebody they know they stink without hurting their feelings.
Best thing you can do is maybe anticipate the day they come and have scented candles burning and open the windows/door after they leave. There is a product called Odor Gun (often used in detailing for stinky cars) that you can spray around after they are gone. It is odorless.
Wish I had a better answer, don't think there are any

i like the soap idea. pretend it is a free sample, or that you are trying to get rid of some stock and give it to them with their shopping for "being such valued customers". hopefully they will get the hint and actually use it. i dont know what else you could do, cause i think if someone told me i smelt bad, i would be too embarrassed to ever come again, so you could lose your customers.

It is quite possible that they are not aware of their smell. Maybe after they leave the spot you can air freshen or something to give them a subtle hint..I dont think confronting them would do you any good except lose customers. But honestly i dont understand why people dont use deodrant...

This is very difficult, we have this receptionalist who smells REALLY bad. One day, I had to help her in front, the whole entire area smells bad!! I went to HR, and they talked to her. It was okay for a few days, but she is back to old smelly herself. And she is super nice. I don't think she knows how bad she smells, and I gave up and just try not to go there too much.

You pay for and have the store do a drawing for personal hygene products. The store only sets out the drawing when this couple is in line and they draw and win. Simple as no one is left out of drawing as it is fixed to those for whom products are intended. Please Please Please do not put perfume in the package - I am allergic to most of those when used to excess and people who stink always douse themselves with perfume rather than bathe.

Tell them the store just got a brand new shampoo and ask if they'd like to sample it.

You could let them know when the soap goes on sale. Maybe you could buy them a bar and tell them it's a free sample.

act nicely to them, but if you this continues it may be likely that don't know about it, so inform them as nicely as possible, after all every stinks in their own special way
