I take my career very seriously, but it has started to consume upwards of 50 hours/week. My 2nd grader needs more help with homework, projects and attention after she gets home at 5:30. I have a very supportive husband, but his job is starting to demand more time, also. We both need to work to support the household, which also includes two sophomores, one in college and one in high school. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This is a problem for all working Mothers and the best solution is effective time management. Is there a study club or after school carer, such as a willing Grandparent, to give your 2nd grader the time, support and attention? You have to learn to balance your career with the needs of your family. Get as much help as you can from trusted relatives/friends but remember to allow for quality time with your kids.

Wow, I can tell that you are stretched very thin w/ a rigorous job, a 2nd grader, and two older kids! I hear you that you need to work to support the household, but is there any way you can go to your boss and ask if you can cut back even a little? Say five hours a week, one hour a day, to help your second grader?

I am sure you are a very good worker and that your boss values you, so you can put it right on the table. Tell your boss that your job and your performance are very important to you, but your child's success in school is also a priority.

In the end, you'll never, never be sorry that you adjusted things to help your little one, even if the boss is temporarily put out or if you make a little less $. On your deathbed you'll never say, "Gee, I'm glad I got that promotion" or "I'm so glad I finished that project at work." But you WILL say, "I'm so happy I helped my baby when he/she was in second grade!"

Best of luck! Hang in there, and God bless you!
