Everyone to their own I suppose but most people would want their own place by that age. If someone has special needs or long term unemployment it may be different although even then I know lots of people with special need housed in the community with 24 hr care and if unemployed assistance is usually given towards rent/mortgage. I don't think parents are doing their son/daughter any favours not encouraging them to be more independant. Have saw many an elderly woman rushing home for example to have her son's dinner on the table. What happens one day when the parents are gone? iI it is a house that is bought and there are other family members in most cases on the death of the last surviving parent the property has to be sold and divided between the family and the son/daughter will be forced to find somewhere else to live.

I'm a Retiree, and have been living on my own, paying all my own bills since I was 17 years old. My siblings and I buried our parents as very young adults (we were all on Active Duty with the Military at the time). Let's see -- at age 38 -- I would have to say that it was just shy of 2 decades of living withOUT my parents at that time ... and ...
The OTHER Point to make here is that by 38 years of age ... I was already planning MY Military Retirement in the near FUTURE!

Our youngest son still lives with me, he is almost 23. He says he will not leave as it is too good at home. We have a wonderful relationship, we have quite a few boys nights, watching football, playing cards etc. He has a good job, pays hardly any rent, runs a big Mercedes, gets all his washing & ironing done & I cook all the meals & do all the cleaning. No wonder he does not want to leave.

I think the issue here is why? It depends on the reason why you are living with your parents....are you living with them so that they can look after you, pay for you etc. or are you staying with them so that you can take care of them, i.e - they need to be living with you. I still live at home as my parents need me at home, however, come the time I get a place of my own, they may have to move with me...

No, couldn't stand it they'd drive me mad. They're still trying to interfere in my life and I moved out over 10 years ago, thats bad enough - you need to make the break, its not healthy to let them rule your life forever.
