Islamically it is ok to go to war if your homeland or personal security is being threatened. There are many wars in islamic history so its not a sin although wars must be fought according to islamic teachings....here is a quick answer as to not get to "deep" in explanations.

The bible states in the 10 commandments that "Thou Shall Not Kill" yet many christians join any form of military. There is always the possibility of going to war and having to kill someone. Its the same with any religion. If they actually followed their rules, maybe this WOULD be a better place. In a perfect world.
