Bring something that will distract the child in the car. They sell Toys that are designed for car seats with the little mirrors and bright colors. Also portable dvd players are on sale. They come with a case that you can hang on the back seat of driver or passenger so that the kids in the back can watch. Put in some educational videos (about 10 bucks those "einstein babies" are cute). You can also pick out his favorite toy and put it in the car before he comes in. When he starts yelling, I give him. It's also a stage, they get used to it later. My son did it too.

Give him/her a special set of "car only" activities. Maybe a special toy(lights and sounds are great for 1 year olds), book, doll or bear.
Also, it may calm things to play his/her favorite music while you're in the car. Maybe disney theme's or whatever cartoon show he/she watches often.
Good Luck!

When mine scream in the car and telling them to stop doesn't work, I crank the radio until they stop.

If I have to listen to something loud, I might as well enjoy it.
