Eat 1 hour before-hand a high carb meal like whole wheat toast and jelly or honey. Bring water with you for any running time over 30 minutes. Be sure you are well hydrated before running as well. Bring something to eat for runs over 1 hour- your glycogen stores will deplete after about an hour. Suggestions for things to bring to eat are: power bars, gu, honey packets or peanut butter packets. Take walk breaks every mile for 1 minute if running a total distance of 5 miles or over, and especially if you only have a base of 3 miles or so built up so far.

Good luck, and take it slow...

2-3 mile run isn't that hard. I remember one night I ran about 7-8 miles and I had no idea what happened, because I usually just run about 3 miles, and I just did 8 miles and i was astonished. I don't even run track or anything. I'm 6'4" 190 lbs. What I do, is get jacked up by listening to music when i run and just keep up your pace, and just think "No Pain" to yourself...just think that your body can take it, and that you're almost done. It's all in the mind.

Pace yourself. If possible, keep yourself hydrated. Don't worry about winning at first. Save some energy for when your "2nd wind" kicks in. If you are talking about a standard 2 1/2 mile course, my fastest time in high school was 14 minutes, 7 seconds and I finished 66th out of 130. Not too bad but, certainly, nothing to write home about. The winners came in under 10 minutes.

If you are running in the north of the USA, wear lots of layers. I went out today in 18 degree weather, and wore 3 t shirts and 2 sweat shirts. I had a ski mask on my head.

You'll warm up after a couple miles, but the first one will be COLD!

Make sure you stretch for at least 10 to 15 minutes beforehand.M Drink plenty of fluid(Isotonic still drinks if you can get hold of them,or if not, water will do). In the cold weather we've been having, wear a wooly hat. ... The important thing is to maintain body heat,up to 30% of which, is lost during physical exercise in cold weather. .... Good Luck!

Keep hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids during the day, but not too much so you don't go to the toliet too much.
Also, when you warm up, don't do it for too long, 5 mins should be enough. The longer the warm up (doing stretches) the more prone you become to injuries.
