At one point, I had five different office suites installed on my computer: Microsoft Office 2003 Professional, Corel WordPerfect Office 2000 Professional, OpenOffice.org 2.0, OpenOffice.org 1.1.5, and SimDesk. Consequently, I spent a lot of time comparing and contrasting the various programs. (And of those, the only one I actually paid for was WordPerfect Office 2000... I got Microsoft Office as a gift, and the others are free.)

For pure compatibility purposes, if you transfer a lot of documents back and forth between people, Microsoft Office is probably the best because nearly everyone has it, which makes the files more compatible (not neccessarily 100% compatible, but more compatible). But I only use Microsoft Office if I absolutely have to, which is not often. My biggest problem with Microsoft Office is the price. It can cost up to $400 ($680 now thanks to Office 2007 Ultimate), which is a pretty big chunk of change. I also have a problem with Microsoft in general, but that is an argument for a different time. But if you don't transfer a lot of files back and forth with other people, then in my opinion, Microsoft Office is a colossal waste of money.

WordPerfect Office was my office suite of choice for a long time. It is extremely powerful, and has some features that Microsoft Office doesn't. It did a very good job of opening and saving Microsoft Office documents, so anytime I did have to transfer files back and forth, I had no problems doing so. Plus, the price tag was a little easier to work with (although still not cheap with prices up to $350).

SimDesk was nice (and is actually free for everyone living in the U.S. state of Indiana, which is how I got it), but in my opinion, is extremely underpowered. It didn't have nearly the range of options and abilities that Microsoft Office and WordPerfect Office had. In short, it felt more like Microsoft Works than Microsoft Office.

OpenOffice.org 1.1.5 was a good, solid program. My biggest complaint with it was file compatibility with Microsoft Office wasn't that good. It also seemed a tad underpowered. But it was free, and much more powerful than SimDesk.

OpenOffice.org 2 was (and still is) my favorite. File compatibility between Microsoft Office and OpenOffice.org 2.x is very good, it is very powerful, and has features that still aren't found in Microsoft Office. I have heard it said that OpenOffice.org has about 85% of the features that Microsoft Office 2003 has. I'm not sure if the 2.x series is that much more powerful than 1.1.x, but it certainly seems a lot more powerful. And considering that OpenOffice.org does everything I want it to do and is 100% free and legal, I find it hard to resist. So that is my office suite of choice, even at the office (where I also have Microsoft Office 2003 Professional installed). You can download OpenOffice.org yourself at http://www.openoffice.org although it is a large download.

I am currently down to two office suites installed on my home computer... Microsoft Office 2003 Professional (my wife likes to train in Excel 2003, which is what she uses at work), and OpenOffice.org 2.1.

Microsoft is much better. I'm a network admin in a D.A.s office. WordPerfect has so many things go wrong with it. We have atleast one problem with it on a daily basis. So I would say go with Microsoft.

If I understand properly, you're searching for Microsoft place of work decision. I agree which includes your remark, and may word that via the time Microsoft releases new OS and new place of work suite, application as a provider (internet-depending) module will dominate the market. So, searching in to the destiny, i ought to attempt Google Apps and Zoho possibilities immediately, and doubtless that ought to help you hit upon MS place of work decision. i'm hoping it helps, DM

Microsoft Office because it works better with Windows. Microsoft Office also allows much more features of naming your document such as .txt, or .rtf and this may be helpful when converting your work to mac if necessary. I believe Microsoft Office is much more efficient.

I am surprised that word perfect office is still around. I really never heard of it. Microsoft office is convenient and easy to use. Corel is so low on the software totem pole they are rarely heard from anymore.

Microsoft Office only because it's more transferable to other applications. Most people also have it, so opening a file is easier (they don't have to try to convert it).

i have both..i had word perfect for 2 years and it was decent for what i needed and was cheap for what i got it for...Microsoft office has Microsoft word, excel, powerpoint, outlook, publisher, and more...these programs are better than one typing program and almost have no limits but they cost about 200 for 2003, and 300 for 2007....it depends what you need to do and how much you need...

I have used them both down through the years, WordPerfect at one time was the offfice standard until they fell behind and was acquired by Corel who have done a good job of compatibility with Word.

Word is cumbersome, Wordperfect allows you to do things so much quicker and easier. In a large bank we used both and WordPerfect was the choice of most users.
