You can still upgrade to Vista, no problem.
He probably used an install code that had already been taken. This will prevent you from getting updates to XP from microsoft.
You can call Microsoft and tell them that your other PC was trashed and that you are reinstalling it on your new PC. They will then issue you another install code.

It means that you have a corrupt version or illegal version of Windows XP. Vista will not accept it because Microsoft doesn't recognize it and if you do try to use Vista it might cause problems when it comes to updates and software not being recognized. So you should get a new Windows XP CD it will fix the problem. You must unistall or see if the new CD can overwrite the version you have.

You should do an internet search "windows vista problems and issues" before buying vista.

Try UBUNTU instead. It's a reliable, up todate operating system. You get it free plus all of the software that you will ever need is free too.

You can order a CD or download it at http://www.ubuntu.com
