Not necessarily - it could be a build up of wax you're smelling. But if his ear is red or bothering him, he needs to see the vet to check for mites or an infection. If not, you can clean it with warm water on a Q-tip, being very careful not to go any deeper than you can see.

It could be a yeast infection, that really stinks! Some of the symptoms to look for with an infection:
1. Scratching ears all the time
2. The ear canal when you look down the inside of the ear is red
3. A discharge that comes out of the ear.

Ear infections are very serious for dogs. They live on their hearing therefore I would suggest going to the doctor if you see any of the above symptoms. Don't let it get too mad though because it can cause serious effects on the dog. Good luck! I hope he feels better and smells better!

Yes, that is usually what that means. You can normally take care of it by using rubbing alcohol and q-tips. Don't put the alcohol in the ears. Just dip the q-tip in the alcohol and clean all the dirt and any thing else that may be in there. Or you can take the dog to the vet and pay them an arm and a leg to do essentially the same thing.

Yeah, it probably does mean he has an infection. Are his ears dirty? And red and inflamed? Does he scratch at them, or do they seem to irritate him? If you notice any of this you should take your dog to the vet to get his ears checked. They can give him medication that will really make him feel more comfortable, and help his ears smell better. Good luck!

He either has an infection or has rolled in something smelly! Can you see any crust within the ear or is it clean? One way to tell is to gently rub the base of the ear. If your dog reacts by whining, pullng away, or otherwise looks uncomfortable when you do this, it is most likely an infection and needs treatment.

Probably, I have a spaniel and she gets ear infections quite often. She will paw at her ear and shake her head. I wash her ears out with cleaner the vet gave me. But sometimes I have to get an ointment called Otomax for her.

Very likely, do you see alot of discharge as well? You can try using a pet ear cleaner from the pet store to see if that helps, but you may need medication to eradicate the infection.
