It's ridiculous. I read L. Ron Hubbard's Scientology book back in the 70's or early 80's. It's just a stupid book, but it somehow got turned into a religious cult by people with too much time and money on their hands, and not enough good sense.

I don't even know if Scientology is another branch of the Christian Scientists. I don't know what they do, what they teach, if it is a combo of science and religion...
All that I do know is that it has been being overplayed very much since it was found to be the religion of Tom Cruise (Julia Roberts also practiced in that faith).

"Scientology, how about that? You hold on to the tin cans and then this guy asks you a bunch of questions, and if you pay enough money you get to join the master race. How's that for a religion?" Frank Zappa

Its a New Age movement. Its really a mixture of various religious worldviews. I think I would want to follow the religion portrayed on Stars Wars before I followed Scientology.
May God bless those misguided souls.

It is even more incoherent than the bible and Koran. Of course I loved the comedy, "Battlefield Earth" with John Travolta as a KISS alien. Lumpy Ron Hubbard had quite a sense of humor.

I feel it's a very real danger. These are just a few of many reasons why Scientology scares me:
• Operation Snow White – Under this program, Scientology operatives committed infiltration, wiretapping, & theft of documents in government offices. This program constituted the single largest infiltration of the United States government in history. Among the 11 prominent Scientologists convicted of this conspiracy was Mary Sue Hubbard, the wife of Scientology’s “prophet”.

• Operation Freakout - Their campaign of sabotage & violence against Paulette Cooper, the writer who published her research & findings on several cults, including Scientology. Scientology’s official plan: to frame Paulette, ruin her career & reputation & get her either incarcerated or locked up in psychiatric confinement.
See the official plan: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/Krasel/cooper/frk1.html
Free pdf of her book: http://holysmoke.org/cos/books/scandal-of-scientology-cooper.pdf
• Fair Game - the Scientology policy detailing how the organization may confront & handle critics & perceived enemies. Here is a direct quote: "Enemies may be deprived of property or injured by any means by any Scientologist without any discipline of the Scientologist. May be tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed.”

• Violent Kidnapping - Lisa McPherson was a Scientologist, was involved in a car accident & resultantly became mentally unstable. She was kidnapped from the hospital by agents of Scientology, held against her will, refused proper psychiatric treatment & allowed to STARVE TO DEATH.

• Tragic Murder - A CBS “48 Hours” special on Jeremy Perkins, the mentally disturbed son of Scientologist parents who refused to put him on the anti-psychotic drugs that would have stabilized him & prevented him from killing his own mother.

It's a cult with some OK ideas for the people they're trying to get into the religion, and then really wacky ideas the higher up you get. (AKA: the more $ you spend.) You know most of it's MEMBERS don't even know what the religion is about? You need to earn (PAY $$$$$$$$) your way to the top, and then you learn the "big secret!". (I guess it's something about aliens putting nuclear weapons in a volcano thousands of years ago, bla bla bla)

A religion that was invented by a known science fiction writer
It is every bit as believable as any other religion out there
Just as much evidence,
I know the truth and will be emplanting the population of earth with the knowledge very soon.

I don't know enough about it to have any feelings. I'm not sure - but I think it helps to be rich if you want to be a Scientologist. It's kind of secretive - from what I understand - and you have to work your way up levels. I'd rather hang out with people who are open about their beliefs and will expose their entire doctrine to you if you want tohear about it. But - overall I don't know enough about their teachings/beliefs to criticize what they say/do.
