Piles (haemorrhoids)
This factsheet is for people who have piles.
Piles, or haemorrhoids, are areas in the anal canal where the tissue, which contains lots of blood vessels, has become swollen. Around half the population of the UK will have suffered from piles at some point.1 They are common in all age groups from mid-teens onwards and particularly common in pregnant women.1,2
About piles
Piles look like round pink swellings, the size of a pea or a grape. Sometimes they are a blue colour.
Piles can be internal, inside the anus, or external, and be seen and felt on the outside of the anus. You can have internal and external piles at the same time.
Internal piles
Internal piles are classified according to their position.
First-degree (or grade 1) piles are small swellings on the inside lining of the anal canal. They cannot be seen or felt from outside the anus.
Second-degree (or grade 2) piles are larger and stick out (or prolapse) from the anus when you go to the toilet, but return afterwards.
Third-degree (or grade 3) piles are similar, but hang out from the anus and only return inside when pushed back with a finger.
Fourth-degree (or grade 4) piles permanently hang down from the anus and you cannot push them back inside.
External piles
An external haemorrhoid (perianal haematoma) is a small lump that develops on the outside edge of the anus. They are less common than internal haemorrhoids.1

Piles are Hemmorrhoids.
Protrusions in the vascular network, beneath the anal canal.
Some doctors acually denote this bulge as an enlarged vein..ie. a varicose vein.
When excessive pressure,or other factors cause the vein within to become inflamed and stretch.... hemmorrhoids result.
There are 3 classifications of Hems.
External, Internal, and/or prolapsed variety.
Either way the mothers are mighty unpleasent and a right pain in the butt.

i think piles is the term used for hemorrhoids when the veins inside are pushed outside the anus after alot of pressure has occurred and when you are not very tight down there if you get what i mean. it can be an age thing too, but if you are young i am guessing it will be the first thing i said. try not to push too hard when you go to the toilet!!! you can get some cream from the docs as well to make them go back in.

I tell you what, piles are no joke. Supposedly, Napoleon had them and he was in agony at the battle of Waterloo. You can get ointment or cream from the chemist. Anusol, or Preparation H, or similar. See your doctor or ask the chemist . It's nothing to be embarrassed about, 50% of people suffer with them. They are a pain in the ar*e.
