The general implication of the term 'short circuit' means what it says - a short(er) circuit than that which would be normal .... in some circumstances it could be to cut through and take a shorter route to the outcome (ie to 'short circuit' the system - not necessarily talking about electricity, could be a metaphorical use), or in others it could mean to 'cut' the circuit (shorten) and thereby cut/remove the level of control over the power flow .....often resulting in blowing a fuse or blowing the system because the power flow is too much for the system to handle....

Part of a circuit has no resistance where in should have. E.G a piece of conductive material (metal/water) falls on a pcb, this will short out the circuit. ie short circuit.

Broken connection or pathway due to two wires touching and burning out. Or a high voltage line that earths and destroys the transformer
