Well, little kids love animals so you could get an animal themed one. Also, an alternative to a border is just painting a design on the walls, such as circles. Also, if you still can't decide what to use, then just paint the room one color and use fun patterns on the furniture. Best of luck!!

Maybe a music themed room, they wouldn't grow out of it too soon
or a castle/medieval themed room
or an ocean/under the sea room
a space theme is slightly more masculine but, my daughter would completely appreciate it

Clouds, stars, or pick a favorite book and put their characters or the wall - can be a boarder, individual pictures or a full mural. When all else fails ask the kids what they would like. You may be shocked at what they choose when given the chance to select for themselves.

maybe a tv show that they both like, like blues clues, or you could paint the room a neutral color, and decorate each side of the room seperately, have the girl with a pink bed/pillows/rug ect. and the boy with blue everything.

if you could find one that has puppies and kittens I would think it would fit for both or stars in the sky or even a rainbow and maybe just different kinds of toys that would suit both girls and boys. good luck

Well, you don't want to go to anything that is gender specific like sports or faeries....how about something like animals or the circus, the moon and stars, the alphabet or numbers, things they can learn from..

moon and stars or nursery rhymes-really kind of depends on their interests-- maybe you could even use a favorite book that they like for inspiration like a curious george room or sesame street...
