yes it is not intuitive at all and you should not have to read the help files .

IN windows :
double click on my computer

single click on the disk you want to run checkdisc on.

right click and get the menu .

Then select PROPERTIES

you now have another little menu.
in that menu select TOOLS

Then the first section is "Error Checking"
click on "Check NOW"

it give you ANOTHER menu ,
there, check both of the little boxes.

Then click on START in that box.

You will then be told the computer has to schedule the repair for the next time you restart the computer.
select YES

then close down all the boxes, and go to the START menu at the bottom left of the screen. The big green start Menu.

Select turn off computer

after it is shut off for a minute,
power it back on and it will be in CheckDisk, just let that run.

Then you will be able to defrag.
Good Luck,

click on the my computer icon on your desktop

move your cursor over the drive you want to defrag. right click it and click on properties. in there you can backup files, scan for disk erros and defrag.

you would know this if you read the internal help files your computer came with.

By just typing "chkdsk" all it does is CHECK for Errors. It DOES NOT FIX any errors it may find.

To actually FIX any errors it finds you have to type:

chkdsk /f

the " /f " tells the program to FIX any errors it finds
