I wear a kilt every day no mater what I am doing. I've received conflicting advice on what I should wear with the kilt. The tartan is BLACK WATCH which I can wear because my grandfather served (and died) with the regement) I like wearing a plain white shirt with a white Aran pullover. Are there any "conventions" which forbid this

I haven't heard of any. What you say you are wearing sound appropriate to me.

No, none whatsoever. A kilt is just like a pair of slacks. You can wear slacks with a football t-shirt, with a white dress shirt and tie, with a pullover, with a hoodie- the kilt is the same. Dress it up, dress it down.
