Ok, I have a couple of questions. About 12-13 years ago my father commited suicide(I was 9 years old). My mother had told me that he had a car accident to protect me from the truth but I overheard her on several phone calls that he had committed suicide so I have known for quite some time(I'm 22 now). I have never wanted to know exactly HOW he did it because I am afraid mental images and horrible nightmares will follow my finding out. I had a dream last night and in that dream someone told me how he did it and now it sparks my curiosity, I wonder if my dream was telling me the truth. My mother is no longer a part of my life and I can't bring myself to ask my other family members so my question is, if I obtain my fathers death certificate will it say how he did it? Also, where do I go to purchase a copy? I'd rather not do it online so do I go to city hall?

My uncle committed suicide. The death certificate states both the manner in which he did it and that it was suicide.
My husband's brother committed suicide, but the death certificate states the cause of death(alcohol and barbituate overdose), but ruled the death accidental. However, we know in our hearts that it was deliberate. That may be the case with your father, it might have been automobile related, but your mother may feel that it was a suicide whether it was ruled that way or not.
Go to your local Hall of Records, which may or may not be located in City Hall. Call City Hall and ask them where such records are kept or maintained.

I am very sorry about your dad. When my husband passed away, on the death certificate it was stated has to how he died. Be real careful tho, because maybe you shouldn't read it, some things are better off not knowing. Have a good friend or relative be with you when you do receive the document. Take care.

I've seen family death certficates but not one for someone who committed suicide. I don't believe it will actually state the method, but they do state cause and you may be able to deduce the method from this. Your Father was obviously suffering from depression and I'm both sorry for your loss, and for the way you found out he committed suicide.

Chances are better that the local law enforcement team that handled the case will have the information you need. Check with the city, state of sherrifs dept.

it will state the reason for death
will not tell you how he did it
if its really troubling you go ask a family member
you are old enough to know the truth.
