In the warmer months I live on fruits and veggies and crave lighter fare. Once this cold weather hits, I crave heavier foods. Often my cravings are not able to be satisfied without really fattening and/or sugary foods.

I'm looking for two things here...

1) Why do our cravings and appetites change so drastically in the winter?

2) What foods/recipes are ideal for satisfying my hunger and cravings and still keeping it healthy?

I don't eat red meat and I try not to eat high fat, sugar, or refined carbs.

Here's the answers.

1. Cravings change to match your environment. During winter the weather is colder and typically you are burning more calories during the winter.

2. Try dried nuts in the winter. I typically stock peanuts and cashews which are roasted but not salted. Just grab a quick handful to address those cravings but be careful. Nuts are a very dense energy source. I also make a lot of hearty beef and chicken stews in the winter with vegetables.

Well these answer really depends on the way of life you want to have. If its a healthy life you have to change your menu in home and have a strong capacity to know what to eat and what don't when you go to a restaurant. I think that in the winter the people eats more that on the summer but you can eat healthier food as well.

Comfort foods like stews, roasts, heavy roasted meats like beef, soups and chowders. Breads.

Stuff that sticks to your ribs!

That's comfort food.

All of the above are healthy to eat.

Just keep a moderate fat intake.
Don't sacrifice flavor.

Definetly soups. You can have just about anything in soup. They are hot tasty and hearty. My favourite at the moment is homemade potato and leek. Yum Yum !!!

3 large leeks diced
6 medium potatoes cubed
2 pints veg stock
Place all prepared veg in large pot with little oil and saute for about 10mins. Then add stock until potatoes are tender. You can add more stock or water until its to your taste and then just add salt and pepper its that easy!!! Enjoy !!!
