"Hope you'll join us in celebration of Sharon's 35th birthday". Do people realize that they will pay for whatever they order at dinner, or do you think that they assume that he will be paying for everyone?

My friend recently had a party like this. I never once thought that she'd pay! I mean, c'mon it's at a restaurant! If it was at her home, I'd assume there'd be free food, but never would I expect someone to buy me dinner!

Since there is an invitation, people will assume the party is a free event. They will most likely reciprocate with a gift. If your BF expects people to pay, she should make it less formal (without an invitation) and verbally say, "Hey, let's all go out for Sharon's birthday Friday night and meet at _______restaurant."
The proper thing to do in this case is to have everyone chip in towards the birthday girl's meal.

I would hope people would realize that they're to pay for their own dinner and drinks. If anything people should be paying for you. You're the birth-day girl. Happy Birthday!!

While it would be best to be a little more obvious, its kind of hard to do so in an invite without sounding rude. I suppose you can just hope that everyone will bring some money/a credit card with them, and then when you order mention separate checks.

It's going to vary by person...you know your friends how do you think they'll read that? I personally would assume from the invitation that the host will be paying. But of course, I'm just cheap.

though i never think that, people tend to think everything is free - usually at a restaurant there is some sort of buffet type thing or at least snacks provided by the restaurant - but "usually" people know to expect to pay for their drinks - lets hope for your sake!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Most people would probably assume it is being paid for but I would go prepared to pay for my own. When people phone to RSVP ask your boyfriend to clarify the charges.
