It depends on how you use it. If you use God's name intentianally as a curse then it is a mortal sin and can separate you from God, but if you accidentally say it, the sin may only be venial. Either way it should be repented of in confession. As far as Purgatory please read below and my link. God Bless!
1031 The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned. The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire:
As for certain lesser faults, we must believe that, before the Final Judgment, there is a purifying fire. He who is truth says that whoever utters blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will be pardoned neither in this age nor in the age to come. From this sentence we understand that certain offenses can be forgiven in this age, but certain others in the age to come.

I don't believe in Purgatory. But taking God's Name in Vane is a Sin. Repentance will bring Forgiveness.

I don't know if I really understand purgatory! is it some kind of holding place? I am told that's what the witnesses believe in.

Oh, darn. How do I always end up in the Religion section every time I go to Etiquette? I don't believe in purgatory and I don't think it matters what you say as long as it doesn't hurt someone. What matters is how you conduct your life, esp. not hurting others. Also trying to help others.

There is no such place as purgatory. However, you still shouldn't take Jesus' name in vain.

Jesus would forgive you, if you asked him to. If there actually is a purgatory, you are in it now.

Nope. You may end up going to Hell, but I think that can be remedied by confessing to your priest or clergyman that you took the Lord's name in vain.

This is the same as asking: "If I flap my arms will cheeseburgers swim with dolphins?"
There are over 3000 active religions in the world. If you fail to study, trust, and believe in each and every one of them completely you may be damned. Unless you have proof that they do not exist..
I have a feeling you better get to work.

I can't say what the punishment for that sin would be. Only God himself knows. Using that phrase shows a disrespect for God and for his Son.
