To fill the void and pass the time away maybe. And they think it might give them some satisfaction but then it turns out to be disappointing. That's what I tihnk anyway.

It's a passtime and fills an unpleasant happening with something good. What can be better at those times than eating your favorite food(s)? This is the eater's logic.
