You have to regulate your breathing to make it go back to your normal pattern. Holding your breath won't help: at least it doesn't for me... then I'm hiccuping while trying to hold my breath.
The water thing works but you have to do it right. You can't just take giant gulps of water and expect not to hiccup. You have to sip it slowly. Keep the glass at your mouth the whole time, breathing in and out as slow and steady as you can. Take at least 7 sips (I usually do more, but do at least 7 or else they won't go away) and pause to breathe and swallow after every sip. It doesn't really matter when you breathe in and out... just take deep breaths... you don't have to do a whole breath between each sip. you can start inhaling, take a sip, swallow, then continue inhaling. Just make it natural. Inhale until your lungs are full before you exhale... then exhale until your lungs are pretty much empty before you inhale again.
No one knows the actual cause of hiccups, but I once heard a report of a man who had the hiccups continuously for over 10 years. I don't think I could handle that.

Hiccups are caused by your diaphragm getting our of whack. The best way that I have found is take a deep breath, hold it and count to 10, then let it out slowly. Repeat if you need to.

Take a tablespoon of mustard and swallow it whole. I know it sounds silly but i used to get bad hiccups from drinking mugs of beer in my younger years and my exwife told me to do that. It really works!

Hicuups are caused by air being trapped in the diaphram. If you bend over and drink a glass of water from the opposite end of the glass you may see results.Simply bending over and breathing in and out, also has worked for me.

I have tried all methods:
drinking from the opposite side of the glass of water.
tried a shot of apple cider vinegar.
standing on my head and sipping from a straw with water.

3 things always work. 3: Hold your breath as long as possible. 2: drink lots of water. And what I believe is the best way is: Have someone scare you.

there is a sure-fire method and it works every time for me...I swear it's the weirdest and most simple thing ever.
Instead of describing it (which would take longer for you to read than the original post), I will link it...I swear, prepare yourself to be amused, because it works every time!
