The reason Im asking is because my husband and I are planning a trip to Europe for late this summer and mind you we dont look or act like your tipical yankees, nevertheless I want to know how much harassment are we to expect, even if its worth going at all.
Thanks.

I can't imagine that you would be harassed one tiny bit! I just honestly have never seen it happen.

If someone is rude to you it's not because you are American, it's because they are rude. They're not going to treat you any worse than they would a European tourist.

Do invest in some pocket language dictionaries, though. I find when I travel they are SOOOO useful. The more you can ask people in their own language, the easier it will be for them to respond, the more helpful and outgoing they will be.

Have a great trip!

I am Irish! And the first answerer (M) said it right. A lot of people here do not agree with the politics of America but have nothing against Americans per say. You shouldn't get any harrasment at all. As you said you are not overbearing yanks! The media plays it up too much really. Don't worry. Read some good guide books!
=) I hope you have a nice trip!

They don't hate North Americans - some just dislike Americans. Get some little Canadian flags and stitch them on your backpack or something. They like Canadians. We're cool. :)

But so long as you don't act American, you shouldn't have a problem. If you're planning to go to Europe, I'm assuming you enjoy the rich culture within. This is good - any country with a rich culture loves tourists who are willing to learn and absorb this culture.

That is why North Americans are sometimes disliked, at least that's part of the reason. The US and Canada don't really have a culture - we're full of immigrants and we're relatively new countries. Hence some Canadians/Americans, when visiting other countries, don't understand that different is good - that culture is good simply because we lack a culture of our own.

As long as you're willing to embrace the European way of life, you should be accepted.

And HECK YES it is worth going! Europe is the most beautiful continent on Earth - through and through. Each country has something different to offer, something completely utterly unique. Also, with the common currency and unified transportation system, it is really easy to get around. You can visit a lot of countries in a relatively short period of time. Europe is a great choice!

Every country has people that do not like others from another country. Just like there are some Americans that hate French or Canadians or whatever country. Basically
there our nice people and mean people everywhere.
But it does not help that dumbass bush is President.

How does one act American? (that was a stupid comment from above?)

none. it's just that some of your ways are a bit wierd for us to understand. what's with saging your pants? guys how does that make you belive that girls will find you more attractive if you do it? and what is with all those stupid criminals who can't even properly get the job done right? like that guy who was robbing a store but got caught because his pants fell down and he tripped.

I only hate Americans who hate Europeans because they think we hate them, (sorry thats not meant to mean you), and those who are hate-able for other reasons and just happen to be American i.e. George Bush. You could go to France though, because everyone seems to hate the French, so they're not qualified to hate you.

Not a lot, just a few. Most of the people just dislike US politics, not the people.

It is worth going !!!!
