Some said before when I asked that once it wasn't swollen it was fine to change it, but someone else said to wait two weeks? Its not swollen and hasn't been for a few days, and didn't swell much to start with, doesn't hurt, doesn't bleed, hasn't been infected or anything. I want to go from the 20mm (I think that's the size, I swear its what she said, but it looks HUGE - I can't close my mouth without putting it sideways lol) to 16mm, so not much smaller, but a bit. As there is tons of space on each side of the bar, it doesn't hurt at all, its not been swollen, and so on - would it be ok? I can't get a hold of the woman who did it for me as she is on holiday so the shop's closed :/ Would it swell up again or does it only pretty much swell up once if you keep screwing with it? I mean there is no pain at ALL (except the side of my tongue where I bit a chunk on accident, but that's not related to the piercing lol) Thanks so much for all the help guys!!

Wait at least 3 weeks before going to your piercer to have the barbell changed. Once they put in a new and shorter barbell, if you are still having issues with the length of the jewelry, ask if they have something slightly shorter to better fit your mouth. If they do not at the time, ask if they can order it if you can order jewelry and bring it to them.
For the time being, if the swelling is down, it should stay down unless you do something severe and traumatizing to your tongue. Just use care as to not bite down on the jewelry and you should be okay for a few days longer. Keep it clean!

Just keep up the daily rinse with mouthwash and analgesic powders to help with the swelling. It's best to wait two weeks, but at least give it a few more days. I know the starter bar is a pain, but give it at least a full week before you go fiddling with it too much. Make sure you're okay with eating normal foods first. If you're still having to stick with soup, pudding, noodles, etc., then you're definitely not ready yet. Be sure to continue with the mouthwash for a full two weeks whatever you do to prevent infection, and like I said, the powders should help if you experience any further swelling.

What you should probably do is wait until the shop is open, and go there to have them change it. They can look at it and make sure its healing well. Plus, with a piercing that new you want the jewlery to be cleaned in the autoclave to prevent infection.
Also, rather than changing to a thinner bar, you can just get a shorter one. They always pierce with a long bar to allow for swelling.

i think i waited a month to change it. even tho the swelling has gone down you'll be suprised how much more it will go down. its best to get the place that pierced it to change it anyway and they will no the best time. I got turned away after 2 weeks coz the swelling was still there. It will be so painful if you dont wait as the balss will make a pit in your tounge

No, you definitely want to wait longer. Infections are more likely the sooner you take it out. When I had mine done, they told me to wait at least 3 weeks before removing the initial bar from the tongue. It would be safer to wait more like 6 weeks. Good luck!

the reason why they give you a bigger bar for the first two weeks is cause they dont want the skin of the tongue to heal over the bar...that happens when its to short. wear it for about 2 weeks...then change it as you see fit. make sure its not to tight and swish saltwater then mouthwash in your mouth even if it doesnt hurt.

No, don't change the bar. It hasn't healed yet, you have to wait 6-8 weeks for it to heal, then you can change the bar. Though if it is one where both balls come off, you can probubly change those if you want a different color, but you can't change the bar yet.
