Yes. Ritalin is just a bad idea, for anyone. It's habit forming and works like speed, why would doctors permit people to take this under any circumstances? It creates more problems than it solves. And I believe that some parents take their kids in to get diagnosed with ADD or ADHD just so that they will be given medication to keep them from being children...kids are hyper, they get into things, they talk a lot, that's just the way some of them are. However, some children really do have a serious condition which should be treated, but not with Ritalin...

Hmmm. I actually know a mother who feeds all three of her boys Ritalin...but her daughter is med free. Situations like that make me wonder. All the boys are always doped up sitting in front of the TV while the girl is out side with her friends playing. The boys have terrible dark circles around their eyes and are sooo skinny. This is abuse and all the teachers know it...who is their doctor is the big secret so it seems.
I do believe that some, some, young adults concentrate better in school with this med. But I also think that ANY mind altering drug should also accompany a form of counseling to help train the brain for healthy thinking and in this case better study/work habits.

I think Ritalin has it's place with those kids/people who are TRULY ADD or ADHD, but it is way over prescribed. I mean, how many of us (as kids) had trouble staying focused from time to time? You had to learn to pay attention. It was all a part of maturing. Now, people assume a child is defective when they simply act like a child!! So, yes, I think some people use Ritalin, and other such drugs, when they don't need too.

Not always.
Doctors and teachers were the ones who wanted to feed me Ritalin when I was a kid though my mother refused. Reason being was of my hyperactivity--something I believe is difficult to control.

Nice use of language. "Feeding" as though people are dumping a bottle of pills in a cereal bowl going "eat up, Johnny". Great way to stir up negative imagery there.
Tell me, do you know anything about psychology? Or the effects of a child's environment, e.g. death, divorce?
Some parents are lousy sure. Some people make the mistake of letting pediatricians give out med's instead of taking them to a psychiatrist.
This does not mean that there aren't children who do have problems and do need to take med's in order to function.

No it is because alot of parents are ignorant to what is really going on with the schools. The teachers are suggesting this.My child is 18 now but when he was in first grade. His school tried to scare me by saying he had A.D.D . That he really needed to be tested and put on meds.Well I don't believe in medicating a child. Some children are on the go all the time. They can't keep still like my child. But he grew out of it.He still has to really concentrate to do his studies but he isn't taking anything. He is now in college. Now adays teachers want quiet kids due to so many of them in class.I think it is outrageous.

Not always but how old is the child and talk to your pediatrician, if there is a way to avoid putting him on it I would avoid it. It doesn't mean you are a bad parent, it just means he/she has trouble concentrating there are other ways of dealing with this behaviour. Call the childrens aide and ask them if there are ways to avoid putting your child on this medicine. Dr.'s are pushing this medication too far. take care Heather

No, it's an excuse for being a bad doctor. Had the same problem a few years back. It's nothing more than a high priced drug being pushed by doctors that make big bucks on it. Do yourself a favor. Get rid of the quack, take the child to the wood shed and wear his *** out a few times.

It depends! It may be for some people, but for others it might be the best possible decision. Remember that Ritalin isn't always abused, just because we often hear stories of it being over-prescribed.

My father and mom on no account made excuses for our undesirable habit, we've been given in deep doo doo every time we did something incorrect. allowing youngsters to flee with homicide purely turns them into adults that be troubled by entitlement, they stay without borderlines, and not in any respect understand anybody or something. My youngsters screw up they get the horns.
