I have two dogs a Jack Russell Terrier and a Rat Terrier and both shed REALLY BAD!! It would not be so bad if it was just one but with two dogs it seems like no matter how much I clean it is still everywhere!! I brush them and bath them on a regular basis but it never seems to help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks,Ashlie

When you picked those two breeds, did you do any research beforehand to find out if and how much these breeds of dogs shed? Because smooth-coated JRTs shed quite a lot and most resources would have been able to tell you this.

Also, what do you feed? A lot of skin health issues and shedding have to do with the quality of food that is being fed. Try a high quality, organic diet (Innova, California Naturals, Wellness, etc.) and also supplements such as combination Fish/Flax/Borage oil for your dogs - this should help *some* with the shedding.

However, while a diet and regular grooming certainly make a difference, these are breeds that do shed. The best thing you can do is invest in a high quality vacuum and vacuum your home daily.

You need to first get a hair tool that gets out deep in the fur loose hairs one that I use looks like alarge closed hoop with a handle the side you use has a jagged edge while the other is smooth approx 15.dollars can be found at any petfood store bought mine at Petsmart. This will help greatly in getting rid of all the loose hairs nad then follow with a good brushing.until the coats get bettr do daily. You should also get a Skin/Coat supplement that has the Omega 3 and 6 from fish oil as one opf the ingredients and at all the Petstore you'll find them specifically made for this problem . You should also check the food you are giving them for if they are getting a high quality dog food then the problem should not be so serious. All Grocery and Discount Store dog ood has Animal BYPRODUCTS-the junk part of the animal and ground up but very little,if any Real Meat which dogs being meat eaters need. Authority is a Good Brand for Dog Food and can v=be bought at Petsmart and other Petfood stores-all a dog needs including dog bones rreats and so on can be bought as the Authority brand. Brewers Yeast-can be bought pill form which dogs eat for like the tasate ,can also be put into the food -I get the one with added garlic and Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids-important for healthy skin and hair. When it comes to a dogs health and longevity what they eat is very important.Actually bathing too much can rob a dogs skin of natural oils which will then make the skin dry and can add to the shedding problem-unless a dog gets dirty or smells bad should bathe approx 1x's a month at the most. If a dog get all the ingredients it should in its food then the doggie smell just shouldn;t be there. Hope I was able to help

U certainly received a variety of answers, some, not the best advice. There r a few breeds of non-shedding dogs, but generally most dogs shed. Daily brushing and vacuuming r really ur best choices, talk to ur vet, he may be able to recommend a product or give u good advice on dealing with this problem. Shaving a dog is not the answer, trimming for grooming purposes is ok. A dogs hair acts as insulation against the heat and cold and shaving down to the skin is a definite NO ! Trust ur vet. he`s a pro, which most of us aren`t.

Shedding is something you can't stop. My answer would be BRUSHING, BRUSHING, & more Brushing! You don't want to give the dog too many baths as this will actually dry out the skin, and then more problems. Also check the types of food available for healthy coats, ask your Vet about vitamins, and BRUSH your dog every other day or so. This will also make the bond between you and your pet stronger because of the one on one time you will spend just with him/her.

There is a place in my neighborhood that does shed management and they basically brush the dog very hard and use a vaccum cleaner (specialized) to remove a lot of fur (this does not hurt the dog)....they usually do this about twice in a month and then they work on the dog's diet

Well...If you are not "that" emotionally attatched; I'd just trade 'em in for a new model. Really. But I may not be the best person to ask, because my mother in law has indwelt, inadvertently; a total NON LOVE for dogs. Im talking, bad, bad, bad hair shedding issues between two medium sized dogs. Whats more; she NEVER cleans up after them.,...like EVER NEVER EVer NEVER NEVEr!!!! and so, when I came in to overhaul her disgusting home, there was 2 and a half (sometimes more!) inches of hair build up on the carpets, tables and what ever.

Unfortunately, shedding and building that "winter coat" are some things you cannot escape. To me, it is NOT worth all that work. Id get rid of the dogs, bc its a huge aggitation when u visit someones home, who owns dogs,.....and you leave and are picking HAIR of your shirt the rest of the aftenoon!

ICK!

Usually brushing them everyday can help control shedding but it is almost impossible to STOP shedding. Or go to a pet store and ask for help
not all your answers are on the Internet (yeah right)

I have a Rat Terrier also, and asked my vet why she sheds as much as she does. It's a characteristic with that breed, you can't prevent shedding, it's a natural occurance. You just have to keep a broom handy ..and deal with it. Be careful bathing too often, shampoo's on sensitive skin- which Rat's and Jacks are known for, will irritate their delicate empidermis. Use oatmeal based shampoo's, and use small amounts, make sure the coat is rinsed thoroughly. Other than that- you just have to cope with it.

Shed for those types of dogs is healthy. Here are two
tips for keeping it outdoors. If you can, let them roll around in
the lawn, especially let them in the swimming pool I use a
kids small 1 dollar inflatable at a full size kennel, I give them as
complimentary. Then take it indoors, if you have a garage, or
a basement. Brushing off requires a shed brush, here are
some sites for shopping news. Love your dog and they can
have treats for not rubbing on rugs, and sitting on furniture.
I put the treats in a dispenser out in the wooden floor area.
