When I was young, we had some neighbors who used to put beer in a baby bottle to help the kid fall asleep. Then they upgraded to sippy cups and whatever. She wound up being an honors student and perfectly fine with no alcoholic tendencies. I wouldn't recommend it though, it's not exactly the healthiest thing.

Personally, I would never let my 5 year old drink. This is the age where they become very impressionable, and allowing them to have alcohol is like handing them a loaded gun.

I have heard of many mothers who used to rub their child's gums with whiskey, to ease their pain. This isn't as helpful as they think. All the whiskey does it make the child fall asleep. Perhaps this is what your friend is trying to do... make their child fall asleep?

I do understand each family, and each culture is different. But here in the good old USA, we do not give beer to 5 year olds. I would say this parent needs help. Perhaps an anonymous phone call to your local social services might be in order?

A very small amount of alcohol would not be a problem. In fact, some might say that it could get the child accustomed to having SMALL amounts of alcohol, and thus ingrain a natural feel for how much to drink. However, too much can have very serious effects on the child's developing brain. A whole beer is too much.

And no child should EVER drink hard liquor.

Probably not 5 but maybe his mid teens. All the kids who had overprotective parents were the ones I had to sit in the hospital with at college. I even knew a couple of kids whos parents made them wait till they were 21 and then they died on their 21rst b-day party from alcohol poising,

No, if this is a joke it is a horrible joke. Alcohol can damage lever even in small amounts, especially children. If kid tasted it a bit, it is not that dangerous, but if the kid is allowed to drink it, that is also against the law.

yeah I would. He can drink Juice, milk, water, soda on special occasions. No I wouldnt give my kid beer, not unless I was suffering from some kind of brain damage! Your friend is looking to face some criminal charges. Endagering a minor, Criminal Negligence, Abuse, Corruption of a minor. So he CANT do whatever he wants. Not only that but losing custody of his son too. Not to mention alcohol poisoning, remember children are much smaller so it take a lot less alcohol for that to hapen to a child.

NO!!!! in Australia alot of young girls where give a small amount of alcohol from the age of 4 and when they where 12 to 16 they all became alcoholic, just remember a child remember from the age of 4 and onwards, and even rubbing their gums with wine or spirits can lead to the same thing. Aussies do it alot!

Your friend needs supervision! It is against the law to give alcoholic beverages to minors and age 5 IS too young for this. If it is just one sip, then your friend might be excused, but is he doing it for kicks to watch the kid get drunk? If so, he doesn't need to be in charge of any children!

HELL NO! IS YOUR FRIEND CRAZY!? You need to have a private chat with your friend. That 5 yo has developing kidneys and a developing liver...Why poison them now, let the child, who will probably be a drunk by the time they are 16, learn these things at an older age, once they are fully developed.
