Hello. My daughter has been sic since yesturday. I took her to the ER but the doctor said that if she was coming down with something that it was too soon to tell. Anyway I've heard that I can alternate Tylenol and Motrin sooner than waiting the 5 hours after giving Tylenol. Does anyone know exactly how many hours in between the alternating? Serious answers only and only if you know for sure please. Oh and by the way my daughter is 22 months and is 25 pounds.

Oh and about the alternating, the nurses in the ER told me that it's ok.

I'm trying to make her more comfortable when she has a fever of over 101 and when she keeps screaming "owww!!!"

OMG People! I'm not an idiot! When it comes to my daughter I'm overly cautious. The only thing I asked is if anyone know how many hours in between alternating them. I'm not giving her any adult medicine, I am only following the direction of the nurses in the ER and her personal doctor. The doctor has said to alternate tylenol and motrin because her fever won't go down and she's in a lot of pain!

We alternated the Tylenol and Motrin every 3 hours.

Give her the Tylenol, then 3 hours later, Motrin. 3 hours later, give the Tylenol again, and so forth. That's what our doctor told us to do.
Good luck.

Motrin is good for 6-8 hours, you can alternate tylenol inbetween those motrin doses for comfort/fever. So at the 3 or 4 hour mark you can administer the Tylenol. Then keep the Motrin schedule.

Yes, it is okay! you can give the motrin 2 1/2 to 3 hours after the Tylenol and then start alternating every 3 hours . They will not need the Tylenol as bad because something is in their system already. I am positive about this.
My real advice is to call your pediatrician's office and there is always a nurse that can answer questions for you. People on here leave some really uneduacted answers and it can be really frustrating.

You can alternate Tylenol and Motrin every 2 hours. Dont worry about the smart *** remarks given by some of these people on here. They obviously have never had a sick kid! Good luck to ya!

Talk to your doctor... But, for whatever it's worth we were told we can alternate Motrin and Tylenol -- children's Motrin and Tylenol.

Motrin is every 6 hours. Tylenol is every 4.

What does her pediatrician say?

If you are concerned about overdosing your daughter with drugs, you can try lowering her fever by giving her a lukewarm spongebath. (Remember, lukewarm is NOT cold.)

Partially wring out a washcloth in the lukewarm water, and sponge down your daughter until the water stops evaporating quickly off the skin.

Check her temperature after about 5-10 minutes of this. Re-check a half-hour later.

Good luck to you!

P.S. If your daughter is an infant, be sure you are using "infant drops" versions of either the tylenol or motrin. And personally, I wouldn't mix the two without her pediatrician's okay.

You are very wise to alternate. I was told the same thing for my 16 month old daughter when they were releasing her after having a febrile seizure. The alternating I believe is every 4 hours? They did tell us though that you will not be able to overdose them if you use the children's version of the meds. The reason you only give X amount of infant's is because it is a concentrated formula whereas children's is not concentrated as severely. Good luck and I pray your daughter feels better fast!!

Tylenol is given every 4 (FOUR) hours, Advil is given every 6 (SIX) hours. Even if you gave her doses of both Tylenol and Advil at Noon, she can have more Tylenol at 4pm and more Advil at 6pm. The purpose: overlap coverage to ensure her fever stays under control.

Get a blank sheet of paper, make entries when you give her the medicine, as in "Tylenol at 3pm; Give next Dose 7pm or later. Advil at 4pm: Give next dose at 10pm or later."

At 25 pounds, and let's just call her 2 years old, she can have both Children's Tylenol and Children's Advil, you don't have to use infants for that age/weight any more.

Please don't listen to anyone that says you should not be giving her this medication. It's meant for kids, she's under a doctors care and she's going to be fine.

My parents are both m.d.'s , my uncles are doctors as well. They all alternate Advil and Tylenol with their kids for fevers or teething, they all do it for their own aches and pains, and advise their patients to do it. It's okay.

I hope your baby girl is feeling better soon. My youngest has been sick since Thursday, and we've been doing Advil and Tylenol too. Mine finds comfort in bubble baths!

It's not something we do often, but if you must, then wait AT LEAST 3 1/2 hours in between. Just be really careful - the potential to overdose is there.

The other thing you might try doing - dress her lightweight, load her up on fluids to drink, and give her several lukewarm baths a day if she's warm.
