I have a little maltese and today he is getting his first groom. Does anybody have any suggestions for how to groom him. I just love all his fluffy hair but it really does get matted and I pretty much have to clean his butt each time after he goes to the bathroom.

Comb out his hair daily to keep out the mats and get the groomer to shave his bum and around it.

My recommendation would be to discuss the grooming with your groomer. As a general rule we do not cut the haircoat of a maltese until it is about one unless it is severely matted and cannot be brushed. I would definately discuss the grooming and also the daily required from you to maintain your dogs fluffy coat.

Are you taking him to the groomer to get him clipped?

My advice would be to get the butt area trimmed so that it's easier to keep clean, and to purchase a small size undercoat rake as well as a small slicker brush, then brush your dog once a day for a few minutes. This will help keep his fur nice and free of mats, and also helps establishing a closer bond with your dog, as dogs that live in a pack groom each other.

Have the groomer give him a "puppy cut". My young shih tzu's have the same type fur & it gets matted even with daily grooming so the shorter puppy cut makes it easier to keep their fur straight & unmatted. Unless you're gonna show your pup, keep his fur short to save yourself some work & keep him clean & happy.
