people in modern times have lost touch with what a covenant means... these are the times of broken promises and its normal ... in times past if u made a covenant with a neiboring tribesman to protect him and when the time came u did not and broke the covenant ... then u would be hunted till they killed u ... they took it much more serious ...

A Covenant is an eternal promise. There is no way to dissolve a covenant other than the death of both parties. Even if one party fails to live up to their end, the other is still required to continue fulfilling that side, hoping the other side will eventually redeem themselves and resume their end of the bargain.
A covenant cannot end or be replaced. It is absolutely and forever for all time.

I believe a covenant was an agreement between a strong and a weak power. Say a King and his army march into the territory of a weaker power. Negotiations take place. Rather than fight, the weaker power agrees to pay in some way to prevent being beaten. I believe that the Old Testament writers used the word to illustrate the agreement between the strong power [ GOD ] and the weaker power, the Israelites. I suppose you could find parallels in modern times.

The covenants of YHVH are a bit different. When we think of covenant you usually think of a contract between equals. Since He is so mighty, and we so weak, His covenants are pretty one sided.
