its not a disease its a chemical imbalance. I felt the way you felt until my daughter was diagnosed. I have tried everything from dieting to keeping her busy to behavioral counseling for two years before I started medicine. I don't think its right for you to bager parents like me about making life altering decisions.

Yes, I do....When I went to school you were real smart you were adevanced and put in a higher group (reading, math) if you had a bit of troubles you were put in a slower group......When times started to change more and more 2 parents had to work and children were going to day cares and preschool more and more and earlier, The child that stayed home with mom (even though she taught, read etc.) was way behind when enterning K.
That is my opinion I seen it with 2 of my boys which I still feel were missed DX...... and as far as meds, Heck no way, then they wonder why kids are drug addicts at age 12..........Who would want their child to walk around like a zoombie, and miss what chilhood was and should be.... If kids got the exercise and this world wasnt so messed up ( I use to walk every where.....)
that they could get around more and be out doors until bedtime
get a good enough sleep they would be able to sit and concentrate in school the next day... My feeling I fought with this issue for years and can go on and on............My boys grew up fine.....to spite the last report unpon graduation was (will never amount to nothing) Who had the problem........................

ADD may be under diagnosed. The fact that pharmocological advancements can be used to treat a hyperactive child isn't a bad thing and it doesn't provide a crutch for parental neglect. There is barrage of tests and medical evaluations that need to take place before a child is diagnosed with ADD. A concerned parent needs to be the one to be with the child and make the neccesary appointments and then pay for the tests ( if they have insurance ) Think of all the kids in day s past that were considered slow learners or beaten and punished for "being immature" and cast on the scrap heap of society because ADD hadn't been identified and couldn't be treated.

Is it ever. My relative, a nurse, sees so many hopped up kids on all sorts of drugs that DO NOT need them. It's ridiculous how many parents are willing to dope up their children with various long-term effecfs in the name of peace and quiet. Half the time the cure is as simple as a good natural diet and weaning them off pop and pizza pops. A second problem is teachers who are overworked and underequipped who cannot devote the time to work with children. If those problems kids had a chance to eat better food and get help from a tutor or go to a private school that can provide much more focus on them it is amazing how many of them do miraculously well. Many parents do not have resources for private schools and tutors, but nutrition is their responsibility as is education about their child's condition, so the onus is on them to do what's best for their child, and learn how to deal with them through self education not sticking them on drugs which is the easier way.

Yes, it is over-diagnosed. When we were kids, our parents sent us outside to work off all that excess energy. So that when we came in for dinner, we ate, took a bath and passed out. LOL Now kids stay in too much. In school all day, come home play video games, watch TV, eat. They are getting fatter and lazier and complain of being bored all the time. Unbelievable. I was never board as a kid and we didn't have video games (Pong doesn't count LOL), computers, DVDs, cell phones, etc. I don't get it.

Ya know! First. Attention Deficit Disorder is NOT a DISEASE!!! It is a condition! A disorder!! Dang. Maybe you should do research on the disorder, even if you have it...or even if your child has it, before making assumptive remarks and diagnostic commentary on it!

Over diagnosed, yes...but my son was recently diagnosed with ADHD, he could not sit down for 12 hours aday, not even a minute among alot of other and learning dissabilities. I used to think it was not real either, but he is doing better with a very small dose of ADDERALL . Over diagnosed, yes...fake, hell no.

Unfortunately, ADD is becoming a 'catch-all'.
But it is difficult to tell what is ADD and what is a normal, rambunctious kid. Because ADD is a real condition.
