I have a cold right now and I think it is just starting to where off so should I go out and log 13 miles today or what? I got a 1609 meter race this weekend at illinois college and I want to do well so I don't know if I should lay off and let what speed I have carry me to victory this saturday or train?

I am also a college runner and I really think you need to lay low for a couple of days and let your body rest and get well. If you keep running your body will not recover and you will just drain yourself more. Also your training this week is not going to make a significant difference because your training usually takes 2 weeks to kick in. I am sure you are already in good shape and you aren't going to lose any of it over two days of laying low and you aren't going to gain anything to improve your performance for this weekend if you run hard for the next 2 days. Hope you feel better and you do awesome this weekend in your race!!

If you've trained properly up to this weekend, you are likely ok to taper a bit. If you feel like running, go ahead, but 13 miles can take its toll if you are under the weather, and can't get enough oxygen in your body. If you do run, though, I recommend bringing tissues, and using breathing strips on your nose rather than taking any cold medications. Zicam works really well for congestion, and won't dry you out or dehydrate you. Do only what your body will allow today, and you'll probably be fine for this weekend. Good luck!

If it is wearing off, I say go for it. But don't push it. Your health now is important for your health this weekend. If you don't feel up to it, your body is telling you NO!! I would still do some training though. Maybe go to a gym away from the elements and use a treadmill....this will give your body a chance to train without the damaging outside affects that could bring your cold right back. Good Luck this Saturday!

Sounds like you should try to just get to feeling 100% better before you go running in a race like that! Well drink alot of fluids and take vitamin C!
