It depends if you are concerned about the security check or the service on plane.
if service on plane, then yes. absolutely you can. you just have too turn it off during take off and landing and whenever you face disturbances in air. Generally, there will be an announcement over the PA system from the flight attendants.
however, if you are wondering about the security checks, then the answer is not always yes. Sometimes maybe?
Since you are flying from UK, it might be a problem. Considering i assume you are carrying it with you and not on a piece of luggage. Due to the recent terror scares, some airlines have decided to ban all techie things. like computers or ipods. It really depends on which airline you are flying. To be sure, i would call the airport I'm flying from and also the one I'm landing in and ask about their policies on what can be taken aboard.

i don't have an ipod (sorry, i don't buy apple products). so what exactly is the wording with respect to operation at 10,000 ft? so what could be the reason for such a specification? is it air pressure? well then there's no need to worry since the cabin will be pressurized so the ipod won't "know" it's above 10k ft is it gravity? surely the difference is neglible (verify with newton's law of gravity). perhaps cosmic radiation affecting the circuits? highly unlikely, as lots of other similar electronics (laptop computers, not to mention the plane's own electronic systems) operate fine on planes anything else? instead of bothering the yahoo community with this, you should bother apple's customer service. let me know exactly what the manual says, so i can pretend to be a customer and bother them too.

you can take ipods, ninteno ds's ect. on planes but whilst you taske off and land they ask for you to turn them off. Normally they let you use them the rest of the time however it depends on the airline, as i remember not being allowed to use a gameboy on a flight recently - its probably best to check the airlines website.
